Bargain Bites: Pasta di Caprese
some inspirational motivation (:
One thing that can shape ones attitude is the circumstances you go through in life. Having to face many trials could cause you to want to give up, to be a quitter and jaded against the world. I have been fortunate enough to have the quite opposite example of handling adversity in my father.
My father had a rough upbringing. He and his family were torn apart by alcoholism of his father. The abuses of this addiction eventually lead to the divorce of his mother and father in the early seventies. To make life even more challenging, my father not only had to deal with this divorce but his mother had to work 2 jobs which lead to him having to raise his sister when he was only 14 years of age.
My father often tells me that he had to grow up real quick due to many responsibilities placed upon him at an early age. On top of all these things going on in his life, he had to deal with the challenges that life dishes out living in The Bronx. Many times there were temptations to do a lot of things that would have made him a much different man than he is today.
Rather than giving into a bad attitude and lifestyle, he chose to do things that would eventually make him a successful person. He remained steadfast in school, took all honor classes and graduated in the top 5% of his senior class of 1000+ students. He stayed active in sports by playing with his friends after school and because took his sister with him wherever he went, he had to make sure that everyone kept the language clean and behaved right. Those around him took notice of his positive attitude and good ethics but still he had to work for everything he got.
After high school, he went on to college but he had to work and go to school full time. This became a very hard thing to do so he joined the military, The United States Marine Corps to get money for his education. My Dad tells me that this was just the “punch in the arm” he needed to help him further grow and develop. He joined an organization that helped improve his attitude on life with special emphasis on morality. This new organization helped bring new focus and direction which also lead him to meet my mother which was the second most important thing that molded his character into the man he is today.
The challenges were not over yet as family life and life itself does not stop. Military life, though shaping his character and giving him opportunity to use his go-getter attitude to gain leadership roles, brought many difficulties. The most challenging of that was the separation from my mother. To this day, they both cherish the letters they wrote to each other.
They were optimistic and courageous in the face of war and they knew that one day they would be back together. My mother had a complication with a miscarriage that caused her to look death in the face as my father was doing everyday while he was in war but rather than feeling sorry for themselves they held fast to love and hope. To this day, my father tells me that this war was very hard on him as he did not know if he would be coming back home but he worked hard to keep his mind off of it and before you know it, he was home in the arms his wife and children.
Now, my father has a Pituitary Tumor and this is his next battle in life. Life never stops- we must keep going and not give up. His favorite quote is: Never, never, never Give Up…Winston Churchill. Watching his attitude remain positive and his faith strong has helped me to understand that in order to become successful in life- to become a leader worth following, I too need to keep my attitude in check. It is far easier to grumble and complain than to use the trial at hand as motivation to not only fix the problem, but grow as a person as well.
“You control how you feel and act every moment of every day. Once you accept that responsibility, you have control over your life.” Oftentimes life can become overwhelming. In these times, a leader with a determined attitude shines. I strive to become a leader everyday by choosing what I feel is right and standing up for what I believe in. If I was to give up every time someone disagreed with me, every time the going gets rough I would never be able to accomplish the things I desire to in my personal life.
You can choose to be a leader by choosing to take control over something that you will always have power over- your mind. We may not be able to control the world around us but we can choose to control how these things affect our attitude. By remaining strong, others will take notice of you and be drawn to you. They will want to become better because of you, and seek your guidance in having the same bright outlook. This is how you can use your attitude to become a leader.

moving {again}
I'll say it again because the once is not enough- I hate moving. However I'm also extremely picky about where I live. Because of this I've managed to move not once, not twice, but three times in the past one year alone. And tonight/tomorrow/Friday (whenever I end up getting around to it) I'm moving yet again.
This will be the first time I have lived entirely alone (besides my dog, who is ferocious if you're reading this thinking about breaking in) and I'm equal parts nervous and excited. Nervous because I have watched waaaaay too many crime shows and happen to have a photographic memory (yes I know stuff like that rarely if ever happens here but what can ya do).
And although I'm very excited about the location, the place and living alone I'm so unmotivated to pack/move that I can start moving in today and haven't packed like, at all. Uggghhhhh.
Once I get settled I'll share some pics of the new place- can't wait to get all organized/decorated/settled. I was not wise when I moved a couple months ago and pretty much threw away the majority of my dishes/furniture/silverware anything I wasn't in love with really. It's kind of nice to start all the way over and do it how I want and also kind of a hassle. Yikes so much to do!! Pray for me :O

in with the new {year}
So I've got a system. No expectations, little to no plans prior to the week of, no kiss, nada. This year I went to the club I go to all the time, nothing exciting or new, with no expectations and did the night blow my mind? Not at all. But as Roscoe Dash would say it was a good, good night. So obviously it is working, because the higher the expectation the bigger the bust. Below are some pictures from the night.

We are usuals.

Me. xx

Me and the lovely Shalaysa {she never comes out but I guess she made an exception for the *shudder* holiday}
But can we talk about how pointless NY resolutions are? If you make and keep a new resolution every new year I am literally giving you a standing ovation right now. Really, you should see how people are looking at me. Not that making goals is a bad thing- I'm always making new ones. But the pressure to think of something big and life changing that you need to accomplish/stop/start doing at the beginning of each year and then actually do it? Exhausting.
Here's an idea- monthly check ins. At the end of each month take a look and say, hey does my life suck? Could it be better? Am I doing something to make it better/not doing something that would improve it? BAM! Baby steps, people. For example, last week I realized I have become the worst at working out. So this week I went to the gym. I think the best changes are the kind you are continually identifying and working on. That is a hell of a lot easier too. Again, if you have the will power to make a big change every year more power to you but as a self-proclaimed slacker I'd much rather stop and fix things as I go before waiting for it to become resolution-worthy. Just a thought.
Promise I'm not bitter. ;)
If you are the resolution making type, one thing I'm always working on is becoming more organized (who isn't?) so I thought I'd share a link I enjoyed with 8 little things you can do to accomplish organization. (Did I mention I like baby steps?)

Criminals and Peacemakers
The Saturday before last, I did not want to go to the club. Unbelievable I know, but I was packing and shopping all day (rough, I know.) and I wasn't feeling it. Of course I never end up actually staying home when this happens usually someone persuades me or someone else offers to drive. This time it was the latter.
The club I frequent on Saturday nights I'm pretty much a regular and know enough people there that I brought nothing with me but a coat and my iPhone. Once we got in the car, Lizette asked me to share an explicit song that is only on my phone (Lizette hasn't synced hers in forever) that we are recently obsessed with since our adventure at the strip club- see previous post- so we put it on and enjoyed some quality profanity. (Is that an oxymoron?)
When we arrived to the club, I decided to leave my phone in the car (ladies if you have the pocket space to carry your phone in without dropping it- more power to you, but I somehow never have pockets.) It was another good night out and I left feeling content except for my throbbing feet. New heels, bad idea. We reached the car and to our dismay Shalaysa's window had been smashed in and what to you know my phone was stolen. Nothing else was missing, not Lizette's purse, or Shay's phone and iPod that were right next to my phone. UGH. I called verizon immediately but the insurance thing takes awhile to ship to you (especially when called at 3 a.m. on a Saturday) so for the first time in I don't know how long I was phone less for more than like a day. I felt like such a cave man. Like really what did people do before smart phones??? "I don't know the answer to that.. and I would google it but I don't have a phone," "I'd call you to hang out but.. I don't have a phone," I could go on for days but by then you'd want to murder me and never read my blog again for sure so I won't.
Because of the delivery schedule/my work/my family not being home, I didn't get a phone again until Wednesday evening. I think it was very beneficial on weeding out people I talk to unnecessarily though. (Kidding, mostly.) It was also very humbling. And basically I hate criminals. (And yes, I know there is a "find my iPhone app" and no I did not have it.)
Now that the hate is out of the way, let's talk about how I'm pretty much the biggest peacemaker ever. The next Saturday (so this last one) I went back to my spot (I know, I'm a glutton for punishment) and was enjoying my night- way better than the last weekend. Good music, good friends and a good crowd. Couldn't be better. I ran into some people I know from Utah State and thought nothing of it until the end of the night when one of them was starting a fight with someone in the crew of regulars I also associate with. Luckily, my bouncer friends are all over it and dragged him outside asap (which I found it kind of funny, because between us the USU athlete in question- we'll call him R- kind of thinks he is the ish.) So you'd think that would be the end of it right?
Wrong.
A beneficial friend of mine (if you catch my drift) who I'll refer to as GHB, saw the whole debacle from the stage and ran outside to see what R's problem was with little J (my name for the one he was trying to fight- he is short so it fits.) Which would be NBD because GHB is 6'3", 250 and solid and the bouncers were encouraging him to knock the hot head R out, but no... GHB wants to get little J and R to "talk it out." Or something.
So there was a spat between the crews and that's when I was pretty much over the night. When I left I shot GHB a text not to hit one of the guys because he is nice... we will call him A+. Well, a little bit later GHB called to let me know he wasn't going to hit A+ until he jumped him and started punching him after the fight had simmered out. So GHB knocked him out. Poor kid. But now that should be the end of things, right?
Wrong again.
GHB calls me the next day to ask if I gave A+ his phone number. I did not, obvi. But somehow he got it and called GHB threatening him saying they were coming down from Logan next weekend and it's on and so on. I advised him that they were empty threats but he let me know that things would have been worse the night before (talking like guns and ish like that) had he not intervened on R and A+'s behalf. What a nice fella. "But this time," he warned me, "if he is going to keep calling my phone and threatening me I'm not going to do anything. Not to start it not to stop it." Great.
"Give me one hour," I replied. He agreed. Immediately upon hanging up, I made a few calls and pulled some strings I still have with some athlete alum in Logan. Within 30 minutes everyone involved had been called and the situation squashed.
Don't ask me how I do it, I'm pretty much Gandhi. Minus the fasting.

Vegas, baby!
We arrived on Saturday and our sole wish for the evening was to go to Strip Hop- a strip/dance club from the music video “Rack City” (http://youtu.be/SCFnewbghps) which we found out would not be poppin’ till like 3 a.m. (which would feel like 4 to me) so I decided to shower and take a nap. About three hours later we met up with Melvin and his friends and went to a club (can’t remember the name) around midnight- which was amazing because the music was awesome and I was the only white person there (YAY!). It was also nice because there was no smoking allowed in the main dance room.

The lady behind us is hating.
After almost three hours we were anxious to hit up Strip Hop so we made our way over there. I have never seen so many big bare booties in my life! There were four main stages with two poles on each that were centered in the dance floor. I was sincerely impressed with some of the tricks these half-naked ladies could do on those poles like I mean they were prob 12 feet tall, on a platform and the would be all the way at the top of them upside down hanging by only their thighs. RIGHT?? With my muscles (or lack of), I would have surely slid right down to my death but they gracefully circled down usually flipping at some point to land in a split. That is what I call mad skills.
Lizette and I also put some dollars on a nice stripper who seemed very polite. I think she was stripping for a cause- like to go to college or something. She gave us lap dances- another first. When it was her turn to take the stage we also supported by throwing some dollars on her. I discovered I am very skilled at making it rain. Somewhere around 5:30 a.m. a big brawl broke out when someone knocked out an NBA player that was there (Marcus something or another) with a bottle. Naturally his whole crew was ready to fight (including Melvin who is related to him somehow)- I was very intrigued to watch but when cops and security started showing up and half the place we swinging punches we realized we should probably get our car from valet. We didn’t get back till after six and I slept from then until 10 a.m. got up, had breakfast then slept again until 2. Lizette and I decided this lifestyle was not easy. I don’t know how Melvin does it!

Almost couldn't get in since I am a pimp.

Poles!

Notice the stripper behind us :)
I was pretty much wiped out the rest of that afternoon- I mean I didn’t sleep till seven in the morning- so it was uneventful and I was cranky. Me – Sleep = Evil lady. I almost wasn’t going to go out but on a whim decided to suck it up and go with them. So that night we went to Vanity at the Hard Rock Hotel which plays awesome music and is very well ventilated (read: less smoke). Also it has the most beautiful bathrooms I’ve ever seen. Like I wanted to stay in there all night. The best part about that night though was running into a regular at the club we frequent in SLC. She is about forty and her club outfit of choice is always shiny, satin, tight, short and strapless. Usually a jewel tone or black. She has cropped blonde hair and big tatas (I assume they are fake but who knows) and she has a serious case of jungle fever. Naturally she was trying to hit on Melvin and Aaron (being the good friend that I am, I watched and laughed rather than helping them out). To be real, she is kind of a ho and I take great pleasure in judging her cougar-esque conquests. (You go girl!)

I look awful but Melvin looks so happy about our free table

Aaron and Lizette

Amazing bathroom that I'm obsessed with

Monday during the day I got a little pool time in (jealous?) but it was pretty cloudy and I was bored so it didn’t last long. That night we had planned to go to Marque (because Melvin, our local club tour guide, told us Mondays at Marque are off the chain). We found out that there was going to be performance there by Red Foo (the guy with the fro from LMFAO) so since I pretty much want to be friends with him, I was pretty excited about it. That day we did some serious shopping for bomb shoes for the night before going to a mind boogling variety show at planet Hollywood which we loved. Finally after the show we found the shoes we were looking for (Lizette’s were six inches tall making her a record-breaking height of 5’5”) and got ready the fasted ever since it was sure to be packed.
Well packed it was. The line was out of control. So we figured, why not try one of the promoters- maybe we could pull some strings. I went up to a friendly fellow who was probably about 5’2” and said, “I think I might be on some kind of list or something…” and believe it or not he pretty much slapped wristbands on us and walked us inside. No line, no paying. That is how everything in my life should be I think. When we got inside, all three floors were absolutely PACKED. And our feet were starting to hurt (especially mine). So we were pretty much over it and about to leave when a guy comes up to us, explains that he is a promoter for the club and offers us our own table. No joke. For free. I love my life. Then when we were tired for the night, on the way out we ran into (drum roll) RED FOO. Who is every bit as funny and pimpin’ in person as he is on his music videos. We didn’t get a picture with him though so that was super depressing.
Even though we vowed to go to bed early that night we didn’t go to sleep till three however passed out immediately and I slept until like 1:30 p.m. And when I woke up the sweats I had been wearing were on my arms and I had just dreamed I was a sea creature. So pretty much I think I did drugs with Red Foo and just forgot about that part.

Since Tuesday was our last night we decided we weren’t going to go out that night and spent about 5-7 hours gambling. We played on a $5 blackjack table for hours without losing money (because we had put so little in) and Lizette kept gambling long after I threw in the towel. Yes, she is still addicted- don’t judge.
That night we decided to go gamble at the Paris since it was next door to our hotel (Planet Hollywood) and on our way out I ran into someone I met at our club out here about a year ago who gave us wristbands to the Chateau the club inside the Paris. Trust me, I wasn’t feeling the idea until I found out they had a wide variety of candy and sweet treats FOR FREE inside. Being a fat child on the inside I couldn’t say no. And that is how we went clubbing four consecutive nights in a row (a streak which we managed to continue when we got home to reach an all time high of 8 nights.)

CANDY!

SNOW CONES!!
Peace out Vegas, for now!
